National travel survey for Trafikanalys
Cities and regions are growing and developing, planners continuously work to create attractive and sustainable environments. Infrastructure is crucial, such as creating bus lanes, new commuter parking lots, as well as pedestrian and bike paths. But how many people travel and where do they travel to? What is the purpose of the trip? Is there a difference between summer and winter? Trafikanalys is a government agency that provides decision-makers in transportation policy with knowledge. The starting point is the transportation policy goal of a socio-economically efficient and long-term sustainable transport system.
For the past few years, Origo Group has conducted the national travel survey (RVU), where residents describe how they travel on a typical day. The interviews are conducted by interviewers at Origo Group who have been specially trained for this purpose by Trafikanalys, in theory and practice, to deeply understand the mission and its scope. The interviews are conducted annually as computer-assisted telephone interviews among a statistical sample of about 14,000 individuals aged 6-94. They receive materials by mail in advance where they can record their trips on the measurement day they are asked to respond to. For individuals under 18, their responsible guardian is interviewed. The modes of transportation covered in the survey include traveling on foot, by bicycle, car, public transport, or other modes of transport, such as paratransit, taxi, air travel, and maritime transportation. The questions also pertain to when one travels, how long the trip lasts, and the purpose of the trip.
Based on the collected and analyzed data, Trafikanalys can provide decision-makers with relevant decision-making support www.trafa.se/RVU-Sverige. The data is included in Sweden’s official statistics (SOS) in the subject area of Transport and Communications and the statistical area of travel habits.
